Brands aren’t a necessity for the style, it certainly wasn’t in the beginning. However, brands can be used to find the exact pieces worn in the 90s secondhand on Mercari. I typically like to balance an outfit with a mix of brand names and handmade pieces. This is not a comprehensive list of brands, and is limited mainly by what’s easily find able online (e.g. Peacemaker is really hard to search), by personal bias of course (e.g. I don’t like Diesel very much), and I intentionally left most high-end designer brands off as I find they don’t really fit the aesthetic-- although they are occasionally worn and referenced (e.g. Commes de Garcon, Issey Miyake). I’m always striving to find out more about these brands, and will update with more brands and details when I can!
