I’m Zekkie, the host of ‘Anarchy in Japansuke’ on WCBN Ann Arbor. If you’ve come from there or from elsewhere on my site, welcome! I’ve been interested in archiving Japanese music since 2020, and this page will continue to be updated as I find more bands. For many years I’ve kept a physical archive to myself, but after returning from living in Japan and starting at WCBN I felt it important to spread this work. I tend to stick to smaller, lesser-known bands in the genres of Psychedelic, Heavy/Hard, Japanoise, Avant-Folk, and Punk. For example, I did not include ‘Sigh,’ a large black metal band due to its size and genre, but I did include ‘Acid Mothers Temple’ due to its genre and importance to other, smaller bands on the list. Although it is primarily an ‘independent music archive,’ not all bands are independent and were included if influential or interesting enough. All artists' Discogs are linked on their respective pages. If an artist was inaccessible on the internet and I had access to the music, I uploaded it to Youtube for easy access. I, as always, have a way more extensive archive accessible on the sea. My starting point for a lot of this research comes from the book ‘Japanese Independent Music’ archived on my scans page and random CDs I found second-hand. If you don’t have a particular genre or year interest, I recommend starting with the ‘Start Here’ tag, checking out the playlist with all the artists, or looking at the more general 4chan /mu/ chart on Japanese music by genre.
